Meet Heidi

Heidi Hennigan Cohen, CPM, RM

Heidi Hennigan Cohen, CPM, RM

My name is Heidi Hennigan Cohen. I grew up primarily on the south side of Denver, Colorado. I have known since I was three years old that I wanted to work with babies. I loved my baby dolls and even learned how to make cloth dolls (and still do!)  I wanted to have babies all my life. By the time I was twelve, I was already writing school reports on the different types of twins and, exploring homeopathy, all while pursuing my childhood dream with a growing passion.  In my twenties, as a military spouse, I had the opportunity to travel the world with my children. Among the places I lived, Germany remains a favorite alongside Colorado. I returned to Colorado in 2010 and began my midwifery journey.

In 2016, I met my amazing, wonderful husband, Alex. We bought our home in Aurora, CO, in 2021, and we have a blended family of seven children. I have two girls and two boys, and Alex has two boys ranging from teenagers to young adults.  At the end of 2023, after a long season of secondary infertility and several second-trimester losses, we were blessed with our youngest daughter. Being both a mom and a midwife is deeply important to me and having a work environment that supports both is something I appreciate about my profession. Therefore, my youngest daughter may accompany me to the clinic, home visits, and possibly births, at my discretion. If she accompanies me to a birth, I may bring a support person to care for her while I am attending to you. I appreciate your understanding and support in this aspect of my practice.

I have experienced a variety of births:

  • A hospital birth with an epidural for my first daughter

  • A natural hospital birth for my first son

  • A birth center water birth in Germany for my second son

  • A home water birth with a midwife for my second daughter

  • A high-risk pregnancy followed closely by maternal-fetal medicine, resulting in an induction hospital birth.

My Philosophy: Grounded in Mother’s Intuition

copyright Aspen roots midwifery

What does intuition mean? “Intuition is the ability to understand or know something without conscious reasoning.” As a midwife I have taken many years to learn and understand how pregnancy and birth works and how to support a family through the birthing process. But how about supporting the mother’s (and partner’s) intuition when it comes to the birth of their child? At Aspen Roots Midwifery, I want to not only grow the knowledge and understanding of how birth works with informed consent of a wide variety of related subjects, I also want to nurture “Mother’s Intuition”. This is the ability to trust one’s self in the decisions they want or need to make.

Our appointments are not rushed. They last from 45-75 minutes and we really get to know each other. This is a time to explore the realms of pregnancy and birth and how you personally feel about it. Pregnancy is 9 months, and luckily not overnight! This is a time to grow into the role of becoming a parent, or becoming a parent again to new little being. I would love to support you on your journey.

Midwifery Education

Midwife’s Education

I am the midwife and owner of Aspen Roots Midwifery, LLC. I have been practicing midwifery in Colorado since August 2018. Between 2012 and 2018, I completed four different midwifery apprenticeships under the guidance of eleven preceptors across Colorado, Utah, Kansas, and Pennsylvania. I successfully passed the North American Registry of Midwives board exam in July 2018 and have since been a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), and Registered Midwife (RM)  in the State of Colorado. Before becoming a midwife, I worked as a doula certified by DONA (2006) and TOLABOR (2009). Since 2004, I have served families in home birth, birth center, and hospital settings, and as of 2024, I have attended approximately 200 births. I have had the privilege to serve families in Texas, Germany, North Carolina, Utah, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and throughout Colorado.

I hold current certifications in:

  • Certified Professional Midwife (CPM)

  • Registered in the State of Colorado as a Direct Entry Midwife(RM)

  • Neonatal Resuscitation

  • CPR for Health Care Professionals

  • Cranial Sacral Therapy

I continuously update my knowledge and skills through ongoing education. Some of my recent courses include:

  • Gold Midwifery

  • Spinning Babies

  • Breech Without Borders

  • Birth Emergency Skills Training

  • Hearing Screening Training

  • Neonatal Resuscitation

  • EMS Safety for CPR Training

Meet the Team!

When attending a home birth, it is best to work in a team! We often work in a 3-person team, Heidi, another local midwife or a primary (experienced) student midwife and junior student midwife. Who will attend your birth is based on the assistant’s availability. Sometimes an assistant is assigned to your birth or they may all share an on-call window and depending on what day you go into labor will determine who will come. The birth assistant fee is built into the cost of your midwifery care.

 Student Midwife

To become a midwife, a student must attend a midwifery apprenticeship in midwifery practice with a registered preceptor. As of spring of 2021, Heidi Hennigan Cohen is a registered preceptor with the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM). At Aspen Roots midwifery we are excited to be teaching and working with Elizabeth Vitry. Elizabeth will be at most clinic appointments, home visits, and births. As she grows in her skills, she will become more active in her support with the supervision of Heidi in supporting each family.

Interested in having a doula at your home birth?

Please come talk to me first! Often the midwife or the birth assistant covers the role of a doula and another person is not needed at birth. But if you are still interested in a doula, both Amy and Jessica have worked closely with me and are great support have at birth. We highly recommend doulas that have been to and understand the unique dynamic of team support at a home birth. Doulas are an additional fee that is between you and the doula.

Precious 3 Birth Services

Oliva is an amazing asset to your birth! Not only is she a birth doula but she is an amazing birth photographer as well! She also had a home birth for her youngest. Learn more at her website: Precious 3

Aimee Jarrett, Birth Doula

Hello, my name is Aimee Jarrett. I am blessed to be the mother of six sons, all of whom I gave birth to naturally with a midwife.

My personal experience as a pregnant and birthing momma was what sparked my passion to help other mothers though their own experiences. I truly understand how each pregnancy and birth are special and unique and I count it an honor to be invited into a birthing room to support, encourage and serve family’s as they welcome their precious new child into their family’s.

Jessica Klauss, Birth Doula

Jessica Klauss, Birth Doula

Jessica Klauss and I go way back! Our daughters brought us together after school one day surprised to learn we were both doulas! Since then we have shared carpools with each other and co-led more than one troop of Girl Scouts together.

Jessica has attended many births as my partner doula and is good at thinking outside the box in supporting families. (contact Heidi for her contact information)
